Nancy Newman – Bio

I have lived within walking distance of the Amazing Port Street Commons since moving to Baltimore in 1981 with my late husband who, at that time, was the pastor of St Matthew’s Church at Monument and Bouldin Streets.

I am a retired clinical social worker with a background in early childhood education. My 35 + years in the field primarily focused on young children and their families.  I worked with children with developmental challenges as well as those who experienced neglect or abuse and entered the foster care system.

For the last fourteen years of my career, I worked for Episcopal Community Services of Maryland as the Director of the Ark Preschool which served children and their families who were experiencing homelessness. Our mission was to provide educational services to the children and support to their families as they regained stability in their lives. The need for safe, affordable housing was critical for the families we served and remains a challenge in Baltimore City and across the country.
